Emily Miller
Credit Risk Consultant
Built for Credit Risk
Building a credit function from scratch is one of the hardest things a fintech or financial services business can do — and it's rarely where founding teams have deep expertise. Getting it right requires balancing growth, risk, governance and commercial realities from day one. That's where I come in.
What I offer
I work with early-stage fintechs and scaling financial services businesses that need serious credit risk capability without the overhead of a full-time senior hire. Engagements are flexible by design.• Credit function build-outs — policy and framework development, credit limit structures, collateral methodology, risk appetite articulation, and documentation built for regulatory or investor scrutiny.• Underwriting and portfolio frameworks — bespoke underwriting criteria, deal assessment templates, ongoing monitoring frameworks, and escalation protocols tailored to your product and client base, including security structuring guidance.• Credit committee membership — ad hoc or ongoing participation as an independent credit voice on your credit or risk committee.• Debt recovery advisory — strategy and process design for recovering distressed or defaulted exposures, covering early arrears management, escalation design, enforcement strategy, and insolvency considerations.• Board and executive reporting — design and production of credit MI, exposure concentration analysis, early warning indicators, and risk trend reporting.• Policy and compliance alignment — translating regulatory requirements and risk appetite into workable internal policy built to withstand audit, regulatory scrutiny, or due diligence review.• Project and advisory work — discrete engagements for specific deliverables: a credit policy refresh, a new product credit treatment, a collections process review, or preparation for a funding round or regulatory review.
Who am I?
I'm Emily, a credit risk specialist with over 15 years of experience across financial services in Australia, the UK, wider Europe and Asia. I recently served at an FX firm operating across the UK, Europe, Australia and Dubai, where I implemented the global credit framework and developed the debt recovery framework from the ground up — improving consistency of risk assessment and governance, remediating internal control gaps, and driving operational efficiencies across the business. My credit risk background spans FX and derivatives credit risk, corporate credit analysis, bespoke underwriting, portfolio monitoring, and board-level MI and risk reporting. However, my experience extends beyond credit. Earlier in my career I worked extensively in recoveries, litigation and insolvency, giving me a practical understanding of what happens when credit decisions go wrong — and how to structure processes that improve outcomes when they do.I spent several years at one of West Australia's leading law firms, conducting high-value mortgage litigation and commercial debt recovery for major financial institutions and government clients, as well as financial health assessments on ASX-listed companies within the firm's restructuring and insolvency practice. Prior to that, I led in-house debt recovery teams, managing regulatory compliance, fraud investigations and bankruptcy matters.More recently I've consulted for a corporate credit card company, building a bespoke underwriting framework to enable higher exposure lending and advising on security structuring and guarantee architectures. I also consulted on the design of a proactive portfolio monitoring approach covering key risk indicators and early warning considerations.Alongside practical experience, I hold qualifications in corporate credit analysis, financial risk management, data analysis, business analysis and financial markets.
Who I work with
My focus is fintech and non-bank financial services — particularly businesses operating in payments, lending, or structured products — that are past the idea stage but still building the infrastructure to scale responsibly. If credit risk is becoming a real function rather than an afterthought, that's the conversation I'm here for.I provide independent credit risk consulting to businesses outside the foreign exchange industry. I do not provide consulting services to FX companies or other organisations where a conflict of interest may arise.Consulting engagements are undertaken outside of my full-time employment commitments and are managed to ensure there is no impact on my professional responsibilities.I'm based between Australia and London, with experience across broader European and Asian markets, and I'm comfortable operating across jurisdictions and time zones.
